Major Fun: The National Museum of Dentistry!

Hey, did you know there's a National Museum of Dentistry in the United States? Yup! It's in Baltimore, Maryland. It's a really fun place to visit!

Here's info on the new Smile Experience exhibit that just opened on June 6:

See people’s smiles from around the world on a dynamic wall of electronic images, test your knowledge of celebrity smiles in the interactive Guess the Smile game, and explore the achievements of contemporary aesthetic dentistry in restoring and maintaining beautiful smiles.

But if you don't live anywhere close to Baltimore, you can still join in the fun, via the Museum's online activities. This link takes you to the laboratory of "Mouthie," where you can learn about healthy choices about food, tobacco, and dental care. Complete all of the activities and Mouthie will hand you a Certificate of Achievement!

Will the REAL Tooth Fairy Please Show Up?? ;-)

Wow! There are a lot of ladies out there (decked out in long dresses and huge wings, no less) claiming to be "the" Tooth Fairy!

I guess we're all lucky that no men have yet decided to take on the challenge! Oh, wait, isn't He-Who-Used-To-Be-Known-As-The-Rock (Dwayne Johnson) about to do so on the Silver Screen??!!

Just so you know, the REAL tooth fairy says she's "okay" with these "impostors," as they're all spreading the good news: that kids need to brush and floss.  ;-)

Here are photos and links to just three of these  "tooth fairies."  Brush on, ladies!

Toothy Kid Photo Contest!!!

That's right! We're having a contest!!!!

One of the things I love most about this whole tooth fairy business is looking at photos of kids who have just lost a tooth. Why? Because every kid's expression is different! Some are ecstatic, because they're super excited that the Tooth Fairy is on her way. But other kids (like Ethan, who is pictured on the right sidebar), are still a bit overwhelmed over the whole tooth loss experience, when their mom or dad snap their photo.

I want to fill this blog with more of these fun photos, which is why I've come up with the Toothy Kid Photo Contest!!!

Details:
*Winners: The Tooth Fairy and I will pick three winning photos -- for the three kids wearing the the funniest, happiest, and grumpiest expressions when mom or dad said, "CHEESE!"

*Prizes: The child that the Tooth Fairy and I deem to be the most endearing is going to get an autographed copy of my book You Think It's Easy Being the Tooth Fairy?. The other two chosen children will receive baseball caps emblazoned with my book cover. As well, all three children will receive a personalized note from the Tooth Fairy. ("That," she just smirked, "is the best part!" HA!)

So, here are the rules:

1) Email me your photo/photos at Sheri(at)Rehwoldt.com by April 15, 2009. Send small files, please. Or you may send me an email directing me to your blog or website link, if the photo is displayed there.

2) Be sure to provide the name and age of the child pictured. Also include a few sentences on his or her tooth-losing experience.

3) By sending me your photo, you give me the right to post your child's photo here on my blog. No personal identifying information will be posted with the photo, other than your child's name.

I can't wait to see the faces and announce the winners!!

So don't forget the deadline: April 15, 2009!!

The Going Rate

This is an interesting blog posting, from The Dental Maven, about what the Tooth Fairy is paying out across the country ... or rather what PARENTS are adding to the Tooth Fairy's typical quarter per tooth. ;-)

(Just so you know, the Tooth Fairy, who dropped for a biscotti and Red Bull to refuel before her long dash to the West Coast tonight, is rolling her eyes at all this parental subsidy nonsense. "I'm telling ya," she just said, "they'd learn a mouthful about budgeting if they'd just stick with keeping things simple." HA!)

Parents! A Toothy Note for You!!

Hey, Parents --

Tooth Fairy here!

Listen up; I’ve got some news to share. As you all know, I nightly travel the globe in search of pearly white baby teeth — a job, I might add, made possible by all of my cool techno gadgets! I love the quest, but lately I’ve been seeing a disturbing trend: cavities. This has got to stop! And not just because it’s grossing me out!

Don’t delay! Take this very second to remind your kiddos to brush and floss. Even better: brush and floss your own chunks of calcium in front of your kids, as doing so will give you an opportunity to have a chat about the importance of good dental care.

And remember: February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, which is the perfect time to get your kids in front of a dentist if it’s been a while. From my own dentist, I’ve learned the following toothy tips:

• As soon as teeth appear in your baby’s mouth, it’s time to start the ritual of tooth cleaning. For babies, use a clean soft cloth, but youngsters should use a small-headed toothbrush, always with soft bristles, to brush before school and right before they hit the sack.

• Keep in mind that children under two years of age should never be given toothpaste with flouride. Face it: toothpaste tastes sweet, so youngsters like to swallow it. Alot. But doing so can cause a condition called flourosis, which produces ugly white patches on teeth.

• Even older children should use toothpaste sparingly. Think “pea” when helping yours squeeze the paste out of the tube. A pea-size dollop is plenty.

• It takes kids years of practice to perfect their twice-daily brushing and flossing technique. So help your children brush until they’re about eight years old. Teach them to gently brush their tongue and gums too. Kids don’t want to pal around with other kids who have bad breath!

• Take a pass on the habit of rinsing. Have your kids carefully spit out all toothpaste in their mouths, but don’t finish up with a swig of water. Any remaining tooth paste residue is a good thing, as it will help to protect your tyke’s teeth until their next meal. That’s like working out without flexing a single muscle!

• Lastly, train your kids to drink — and prefer — water. Sweet drinks such as juices and soda are cavity magnets. You wouldn’t let your kid suck on lollypops all day, would you? No! So why let them coat their teeth with high-sugar drinks throughout the day?

Thanks for your help!

One of the perks of school visits is the sweet notes the kids write up afterward. They make you feel like a rock star! HA!

Here are a few of my favorite ones:

Here are two pictures of the Tooth Fairy I received as well.
