Interesting Tooth Trivia

Did you know....

* Vulcanized rubber, discovered in 1839 by Charles GOODYEAR, was used to hold dentures in place.

* In ancient Japan, women dyed their teeth black. Pro: the tannin powder and ferrous acetate solution helped to kill bacteria!!

* In the Middle Ages, a decayed tooth was likely pulled by a monk, priest, barber or surgeon. (Or maybe your dad??)

* Also, in the Middle Ages, people with tooth aches placed an onion slice on the ear closest to the aching tooth. Hmmm....I wonder if they later ate the onion? (Waste not, want not! HA!)

* Which U.S. president had dentures made from hippo tusks, cow teeth, and ivory? Yup, President Washington. Think he brushed? NOT!

* Which ancient people bored holes in their teeth to add decorative bits of green and black jadeite? Yup, the Maya!!

Shamless self-promotion: For lots more fascinating info about the ancient Maya, read my children's activity book, Amazing Maya Inventions You Can Build Yourself.
